WESLACO- Ernest A. Whitaker, 73, died Saturday morning Jan 2, 1988 at Valley Baptist Medical Center after a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday Jan 4 in the McCaleb Funeral Home with Dr. Leslie Mills, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park. He moved to the Valley in 1922. His family was involved in extensive citrus production in and around Weslaco for many years. The family home was at Mile 13 North and Mile 5 West. A 1933 graduate of Weslaco High School, he served with the army in World War II. In 1947 he married Pauline Schwarz, who survives him. He was employed by the Weslaco Citrus Association and spent 25 years with the Weslaco Box division of the TexSun Corp. At one time engaged in the retail hardware business at Hebbronville, returning to Weslaco in 1972. He retired in 1981 as manager of the Valley Growers retail store. A longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Weslaco, he served as a deacon. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and was an avid hunter and sportsman in the Valley. Survivors in addition to the wife are a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Dyer of Weslaco, two brothers, Floyd Whitaker and Leon Whitaker, both of Weslaco, two sisters, Mrs. Wilma Brewer of Hugoton, Kan. and Mrs. Edith Salge of Boerne.
