Weslaco -- Leon Whitaker, 92, entered eternal rest on March 22, 2005, while residing at Valley Grande Manor in Weslaco. He was born in Tushka, Okla., on Sept. 3, 1912, to Felix and Rosa Whitaker. The Whitaker family came to Texas by covered wagon in 1922 and settled on acreage north of Weslaco. Leon worked for the TexSun Corp. in various management positions for 51 years. While employed full-time for TexSun, he also owned and cared for 75 acres of citrus and was co-owner of Whitaker's Citrus Nursery, one of the largest in the Valley from the early 1950s through the late 1980s. Even with his busy schedule, he had time to be faithful to the Lord as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Weslaco and pursue pastimes such as hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Edinburg Citrus Association and the Valley Sportsman Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Doris Whitaker of Weslaco; sons, Roger of Weslaco, Jerry (Lina) of Edinburg; daughter, Elaine (Walter) McKEE of Grandfalls, Texas; granddaughters, Gayla (Jon) Turner of Austin, Kimberly McKee of Lubbock, Kristen (John) Adams of Bandera; and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Madison Adams of Bandara. Also surviving are his brother, Floyd Whitaker of Weslaco; sister-in-law, Pauline Whitaker of Weslaco; brother-in-law, Morton Brewer of Hugoton, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Rosa; sisters, Wilma Brewer and Edith Salge; brother, Ernest; sister-in-law, Aline Whitaker, and brother-in-law, Oscar Salge.
Visitation will be held today, March 24, 2005, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
Graveside services and interment will be Friday, March 25, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. Officiating the services will be the Rev. Chris Rangel, associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Weslaco.
Friends may make memorial contributions to First Baptist Church, 600 S. Kansas Ave., Weslaco, Texas 78596, or to a charity of choice. Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
