Lorena B. White
October 6, 1915 - November 20, 2007

Lorena Blanche (Boren) White died Tuesday at the Corvallis Manor. She was 92.

Lorena was the youngest of seven children born to Maurice Elmer and Mabel Hannah (Bagg) Boren. The family lived in Genoa, Neb., across the road from the ill-fated Indian School. Her father ran a furniture store and was the town mortician.

While still a toddler, the family moved to a farm near Fairmont, Neb. They had one of the few homes with indoor plumbing and electricity. The indoor facilities fascinated her friends.

Lorena's father died when she was 9 years old, and the family moved to town when her mother lost the lease to the farm. Lorena continued her education, graduating from Fairmont High School in 1933. Her ambition to teach in a one-room country school ended when only two children enrolled.

Her fortunes quickly improved. Despite her strict Methodist upbringing, she attended a Fairmont Alumni dinner-dance also attended by Donald White, a local farmer — "Why that's Doc' White! He doesn't belong here! He went to school in Grafton!" They were married Nov. 24, 1934, by the justice of the peace of Mankato, Kan., a popular elopement destination.

After the wedding the couple returned to Fairmont where they farmed until the Depression and the dust storms took their toll. In 1938 they joined the westward migration of refugees from the Dust Bowl and settled in Corvallis, where they spent the rest of their lives.

Her husband worked seasonally in the local hop yards and at night as a candler at Russell's Chicken Hatchery before finding full-time employment at Oregon State College. Lorena worked cleaning businesses in downtown Corvallis and evenings at dinner parties given by Army officers stationed at Camp Adair. After the war she worked part-time as a nurse's aide at the Corvallis General Hospital before becoming a receptionist and office manager for Doctors Emil Howard and Alice M. Bahrs.

After Dr. Howard retired, Lorena continued to work for Dr. Bahrs until the doctor's death in 1996. Their long friendship allowed the "farm girl from Nebraska" to accompany the doctor during the doctor's extensive travel from Russia to Tahiti, from Alaska to the Galapagos Islands and many points in between.

Throughout her life Lorena enjoyed good conversation. Sadly, as she grew older the conversations featured fewer and fewer stories from her youth. Eventually they all faded from memory, but true to her nature, the memories — while they lasted — were more about the happy times than about the hard times.

Lorena was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a former member of the Royal Neighbors of America, the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by Donald Kermit White, her husband of nearly 64 years; her parents, five brothers and a sister; sister-in-law Gladys (White) Lefier of Fairmont; nephews Francis Boren of South Lake Tahoe, Cal., Jack Boren of Grand Island, Neb., and Wade Waddell of Salem.

She is survived by her son, Bill White, of Corvallis; daughter Carolyn and husband Neil Buono of Topeka, Kan.; son Ronald Eugene and wife Quixie White of Corvallis; sister-in-law Reva (White) Waddell of Corvallis; granddaughters Lorena Buono of Topeka and Capt. Doima Buono of Fort Cambell, Ken.; step-granddaughters Jennifer Andrews of Albany and Valerie Stroud of Carmichael, Calif.; one great granddaughter and three great grandchildren; niece Barbara (Boren) Watkins of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., nephew Neil Priefert of Fairmont and nieces Wilma Baker of Norfolk, Neb., and Vivienne Loge of York, Neb.; niece Delma Paul of Beatrice, Neb., and nephews Howard Lefler of Fairmont and Francis Lefler of Loveland, Colo.; nieces Pamela (Waddell) Loge of Millsap, Texas, and Celeste (Waddell) Cornish of Palm Desert, Calif.

Viewing at DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Crystal Lake Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to Alzheimer's Association of Oregon or the American Diabetes Association in care of DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home, 815 NW Buchanan Ave., Corvallis, OR 97330.
