OBITUARY - Mrs. Madison W Klotz, one of Columbus Junctions better known and greatly esteemed pioneers, passed away at her home on South Hill the morning of September 11, 1941, following a brief illness.
Lucy Jane Kelley was born in Cedar county, Iowa, near Tipton, November 16, 1852 and was aged 88 years, 10 months, and 11 days. She was the daughter of John B Kelley, a prominent stock dealer and farmer of the Ayersville community and his wife Jane Ford Kelley.
At the age of 16 years she was graduated from the Tipton public schools and soon afterwards was employed as teacher at what was then known as the The White Pigeon School. On December 18, 1869 she was united in marriage to Madison William Klotz of Old Clifton. Mr. Klotz at that time was engaged in the retail dry goods and grocery business.
In 1875 they moved the store and their residence to Columbus Junction, Iowa. Here Mr. & Mrs. Klotz and their family of one son and several daughters enjoyed the companionship of a wide circle of friends. One of the very happy Golden Wedding observances in this community was enjoyed in December 1919 at their home on South Hill where they had then lived for more than 40 years.
Eight children blessed this union. The 5 surviving children left to mourn her passing are Florence of this city; Mrs. Winnifred Strickland of Brooklyn, NY; Mrs. Beatrice Shahan, who has made her home with her mother in last years; Mrs. Gretchen Fornare of St. Paul, Minnesota; and a son, Madison of Greensboro, NC. Her husband and 3 daughters preceded her in death. These daughters were Mamie, the wife of Fred M Colton; Gertrude and Carrie.
She is also survived by four grandchildren, Mrs. Greta Rutherford of Coronada, Ca; Mr. Burton Butler of Minneapolis, Mn; Leslie Evan Shahan of Columbus Junction, and Madison Klotz Jr. of Greensboro, NC; 2 gr. grandchildren, William Rutherford of Ca and Robert Parker Butler of Minneapolis. Also by one brother, John B Kelley of Jackson, Wyoming now the last surviving member of the family. Favorite hymns were played before and after the service by Miss Effie Kelley.
