John was the son of (Francis and Elizabeth Steffey Kelley. He married Lizzie Randall of Pocahontas, Iowa on December 10, 1885 at the home of his sister Fannie (Mrs Asa Ellis). John was a farmer and Lizzie was a school teacher in Sac City, Iowa. They were the parents of William, Charles, Mabel, Hazel, James, Pearl, & John Kelley.

There is no stone on Johns grave. He is buried beside David Auen, who has the same lot number.

December 18, 1885 Sac Sun - At the residence of Asa Ellis in Douglas Township December 10, 1885 by Elder G.G. Emery, Mr. John B. Kelly of Sac County to Miss Lizzie M Randall of Pocahontas County. Mr Kelly is an enterprising young farmer and Miss Randall is Sac County's best school teacher. They have the best wishes of numerous friends for their future happiness.
