Charles was the son of John B. Kelly, and Lizzie Randal. He married Gertrude Johnson on 21 Mar 1914 in Early,​ Sac,​ Iowa. They were the parents of Lester M, Pauline Lucille (1917, buried in Newell, IA), Walter Vernon(1920), and Mildred Leone (1923). Charles had 2 operations previous to his death.

The Odebolt Chronicle - Thursday , July 13th, 1939 - Charles Kelly, 49, farmer living one mile east and one and one quarter miles south of Early, died Saturday as the result of a self inflicted rifle-shot. Coroner G.H. Bassett of Sac City said the tragedy was the result of poor health over a period of several years. No inquest was held. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Sac City Monday.

Mr. Kelly is survived by his wife and four children, two boys and two girls.

Lake View Resort - Thursday , July 13th, 1939 - Commits Suicide - Charles Kelly, 49, farmer living one mile east and one and one quarter miles south of Early, took his life Saturday by a self inflicted rifle shot. Coroner GH Bassett of Sac City termed the tragedy as the result of poor health over a period of several years. No inquest was held.

Mr Kelly, a highly respected farmer and neighbor, inflicted the wound while lying on his back in the entry way to a granary, lived until about 5 o'clock in the evening. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Sac City on Monday. Mr Kelly left his bereaved wife and four children, 2 boys and 2 girls.
