Born/Died: 1726 - 1795
Residence: Tryon, Stone Arabia, on the Mohawk River.
Son of Johannes Empey and Elizabeth Schnell
Marriage: Maria Elizabeth Barbara Schultsin (1721-1779).
As a Tory, Philip supported the British cause, he was among those who openly and fearlessly declared loyalty to the British Crown. During the American Revolution he was jailed in the spring and summer of 1777. "He was forced away from his home in the year 1777. All his sons except two small children were in the King's troops, he had six sons in the King's service. Claimant came to Canada with Sir John Johnson when he came up to the Mohawk River about the year 1780. Served himself afterwards in Sir Johnson's Regiment, first battalion." (Claim for Losses, dated 6 Dec. 1788). Philip enlisted on 22 May 1780 and served in the First Battalion of Sir John Johnson's King's Royal Regiment of New York along with his sons.

Revolutionary War:
- On 15 Aug. 1777 sons Philip Empey Jr., William Philip Empey, John P. Empey, Jacob Empey, and Adam P. Empey enlisted and served with the First Battalion, Sir John Johnson's K.R.R.N.Y.
- Philip Sr. enlisted: 22 May 1780 (K.R.R.N.Y.), with son Christopher (enlisted same date). Memorial 203968332. They both served in Capt. Patrick Daly's Company.
- Rank: Private, no evidence he was commissioned.
- Service details: Jailed spring and summer of 1777 as a Tory (New York). Came to Canada with Sir John Johnson in 1780, enlisted 22 May. After enlistment served in Capt. Patrick Daly's Company.
- Domicile/Trade: Tryon, Stone Arabia (New York) on the Mohawk River, Farmer.
- Where settled and with what family: Royal Township 2, Cornwall, with his 2 youngest children, a son and daughter. The Empey families were granted Lots 4, 5 and 6 on the waterfront.

Philip Empey Sr. is on the 1784 Provisioning Lists for disbanded troops and Loyalists settled in Township No. 2 (Cornwall). Philip has a young son and daughter with him, is in Montreal and was expected up that Fall. On the same list for Cornwall are his sons Corp. Philip Empey with wife and 2 children; William Empey with wife and 2 children; Jacob Empey; Stophel Empey (Christopher); and Peter Empey with wife. In Township 3, Osnabruck Township, are Adam Empey and John Empey who are in Montreal for seed wheat. Daughter Mary married John Link of Cornwall, and Barbara married Michael Venance or (Vincent?) of Cornwall.

Note: Philip Empey had two nephews, Adam and John W. Empey from Riemensnyder's Bush enlist the same day as his sons enlisted (15 Aug. 1777), and they both served as Grenadiers. Adam and John were granted land in Royal Township 3, Osnabruck.
