In 1930 he married Margaret Ruth Davis, daughter of the former Governor of Idaho. He began law practice in Superior and later moved to Lincoln to serve as assistant attorney general for the State of Nebraska. He was a lecturer and author of numerous articles on federal and state tax matters. He was one of the three Nebraska commissioners in the Conference of Uniform State Laws.
During World War II Capt. Stubbs saw service in all theaters of the war, commanding LST squadrons and flotillas.
In 1952 the family moved to Alliance, Nebraska where Dan was a partner in the law firm of Stubbs and Metz.
The Stubbs were parents to three sons, John Michael "Mike" Stubbs, David William Stubbs, and Daniel F. Stubbs.
