John Michael "Mike" Stubbs, 83, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died on Thursday, March 16, 2017.

He was born December 9, 1933 in Nebraska, to Agnes Loy and Ray Willard Lawrence. He was given the name Glenn Allen Loy.

In 1934 he was adopted into the loving home of Daniel Stubbs and Margaret Ruth (Davis) Stubbs, and given the name John Michael Stubbs.
His father was a Naval officer, and during World War II the family moved to Evanston, IL, Dartmouth, NH, Milledgeville, GA and finally to Orlando, FL until the end of the war.

Mike began his college career at the University of Nebraska where he was on the Cornhusker football team until going in the Army during the Korean War. After his service he married and then resumed his college career at Nebraska State College at Chadron. He graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in Wildlife Technology and in 1961 came to Tennessee where he worked for about 30 years as a fisheries biologist for the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission, now Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. He was among the first to assign monetary value to the loss of aquatic life due to pollution.

Bass fishing was his special passion, especially tournament fishing as both a participant and for many years as owner of Professional Bass Fishermen, Inc. Under his leadership PBF was recognized as one of the most outstanding tournament circuits in the Southeast.

Mike was an active member of Belmont United Methodist Church. He was an avid fan of Vanderbilt baseball and basketball, the Predators and the Tennessee Titans. He loved reading and was seldom found without a book in his hands.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy Castle Stubbs, daughters Stephanie Hinton of Cookeville and Catherine Stubbs of Covington, GA, granddaughter Corey Hinton Williams (Matt) of Tulsa, OK, brother Dr. Daniel Stubbs of San Luis Obispo, CA, a niece and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by son John Robert Stubbs and a brother David William Stubbs.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Belmont United Methodist Church, 2007 Acklen Avenue on Monday, March 27.

Visitation at 1pm in the Iris Room will be followed by the service in the sanctuary at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Belmont United Methodist Church, the Nashville Humane Assn., 213 Oceola Ave, Nashville, TN 37209 or the Cumberland River Compact, 2 Victory Ave., Suite 300, Nashville, TN 37213.
