Mary Anna Chesteen was born Mary Anna Garrett in Mississippi on Dec. 14, 1879, the daughter of William Terrell and Nancy Civility (Stewart) Caldwell Garrett. On Sept. 1, 1898, she married Charlie W. Chesteen, near Kilmichael, Montgomery County, Mississippi, where they would have nine children. After her husband's death in 1954, she continued to live there until 1958, when she moved to China Lake, California, with one of her daughter's, Minnie C. Stevens. There, she lived for the rest of her life and died there on Dec. 29, 1977, at age 98.

Mrs. Mary Anna Chesteen

Mrs. Mary Anna Chesteen, 98, of Ridgecrest, Calif, died Thursday, Dec. 29, at Ridgecrest after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Montgomery Co., the widow of the late Charles W. Chesteen.

Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Beulah Landrum & Mrs. Lois Cummins, both of Stewart; Mrs. Minnie Stevens of China Lake, Calif, Mrs. Lura Ware of Houston, Mrs. Juanita Madden of Los Osos, Calif, & Mrs. Charlene Basile of Waburn, Mass.; one son, A.J. Chesteen of Grenada; 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. D.D. Blanton of Osyka, at Nations Poplar Creek Bapt. Church at 10 a.m. Monday Jan. 2. Burial was in the church cemetery with Oliver Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers were James Cummins, Billy Cummins, William Dodd, Melvin Hardy, Billy Daughety and Noel Bain.
