Charlene Chesteen was the daughter of Charlie W. and Mary Anna Chesteen. She graduated from Kilmichael (Miss.) High School in 1940 and at Holmes Junior College, Goodman, Mississippi, in 1942. She then worked for the U.S. War Department as a clerk, mainly at Camp McCain, Grenada, Mississippi, until the end of World War II.
She then married M. Joseph Basile in Winona, Mississippi, on Sept. 9, 1945, and they lived in Arlington, Massachusetts, from 1946 to 1949, when they moved to Woburn, Massachusetts. They raised five children and from 1962 to 1978 she worked for the Burlington (Mass.) Public Schools, mainly as a substitute teacher, until her illness. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church (Woburn) and had been an active member of its White Class. She died from cancer at age 58 and is buried at Lot 620, Hodges Ave., Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
