Minnie Lucille (Chesteen) Stevens was born near Kilmichael, Montgomery Co., Miss., on Nov. 23, 1913, daughter of Charlie W. and Mary Anna (Garrett) Chesteen. She graduated at the Montgomery Co. Agricultural High School in Kilmichael in 1931 and at Holmes Jr. College, Goodman, Miss., in 1934. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A.E.) degree from the University of Mississippi in 1941 and was a member of the Popular Creek Nations Baptist Church.
She taught in the Big Black Special Schools (Nations) in Kilmichael from 1935-42, and at Aberdeen (Miss.) City Schools from 1942-43. She was the first woman to be elected Superintendent of Education, Montgomery Co., Miss., in 1944, and was re-elected through 1954. She was also President of the Mississippi Education Assn. in 1950-51.
In 1954, she married and moved to Florida, where she taught from 1955-57. She then moved to California, teaching in Rialto in 1957-58 and at the China Lake Elementary Schools from 1958-79, during which time she had divorced. Retiring in 1979, she returned to Mississippi, settling in Houston, Chickasaw Co., where she died on Aug. 16, 2003, at age 89.

KILMICHAEL - Services for Minnie Chesteen Stevens, 89, of Houston, who died of heart failure Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Magnolia Personal Care Home, will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Poplar Creek Nations Baptist Church near Kilmichael.
Mrs. Stevens, a retired educator, was the first female superintendent of education in Montgomery County, serving from 1944 to 1954. She taught school for 40 years in Mississippi, Florida and California and served as president of the Mississippi Educators Association in 1951. She was a member of Poplar Creek Nations Baptist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Lura C. Ware of Houston; and 20 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Wednesday at the church.
Burial will be in Poplar Creek Nations Cemetery.
The Rev. Drew Blanton will officiate at the services.
Oliver Funeral Home of Winona is in charge of arrangements.
