Russell Lee Poynter, 83, of Berea, died suddenly Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Baptist Health Richmond of complications of Covid-19. He was a Boone Gap native (Rockcastle County) born February 24, 1937, son of the late Laney and Agnes Lambert Poynter, U. S. Army veteran, retired carpenter, farmer, member of Fairview Baptist Church and a life-long resident of Rockcastle County.

Russell loved gardening and was especially generous with the vegetables from what he called his community garden. He loved children and was known as Grandpa by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was well known as “the man on the porch who waves at everyone” that passes his home.

Survivors include one brother, David (Shirley) Poynter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives and friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 8 brothers, Warren, Clayton, Marion, Robert, Delbert, Laney, George and Donald.
