Hugo Rutherfurd was the son of the New York social figure Winthrop Rutherfurd(1862-1944) and Alice Morton Rutherfurd(1879-1917). His father, Winthrop was the son of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd(1816-1892)(known astronomer) and Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant Rutherfurd. His mother, Alice Morton Rutherfurd was the daughter of Levi P Morton(1824-1920). Levi Morton was the U.S. Vice President under U.S. President Benjamin Harrison from 1889-1893 and Governor of New York from 1895-1897.
Winthrop and Alice had six Children: Winthrop, John, Hugo, Guy, Lewis Morton and a daughter Alice Rutherfurd. The Rutherfurd estates were in Allamuchy, New Jersey and Aiken, South Carolina.
Hugo was an accomplished oarsman who rowed on crews at his prep school, St Paul's in Concord, New Hampshire and his college, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. He was a graduate of 1934, member of the Alumi and contributor in 1969 to the construction of the indoor rowing tank. Hugo married Francesca(Frankie)Villa Rutherfurd (1922-1995).
Hugo was a resident of Aiken, S.C. and Hobe Sound, FLA.
He died two months after his 94th birthday.
A service was held in the Rutherfurd family chapel which was part of the family estate in Allamuchy, NJ. He is buried at Tranquility Cemetery in the Rutherfurd family plot, near the Rutherfurd estate in Allamcuhy, New Jersey.
