Barbara Rutherfud Knowles was the daughter of Winthrop C. Rutherfurd( 1862-1944) and Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd (1891-1948).The family was from New York, New York and had homes in both Allamuchy, New Jersey and Aiken, South Carolina. She was a graduate of Aiken Day School and the Fermata School. Her father, Winthrop Chandler Rutherfurd was know has one of the finest bachelors of New York City having been secretly engaged to Consuelo Vanderbilt before marrying Miss Alice Morton, daughter of Levi P. Moron, US Vice President under President Benjamin Harrison and Governor of New York. After the sudden death of Alice Morton on June 19, 1917, Winthrop found himself a widower with six young children. In February 1920 he married the very beautiful and elegant Lucy Page Mercer, who restored the love and devotion to this large family which was returned in full measure. This happy new union produced one new very welcomed addition a daughter Barbara Rutherfurd. The family spent there summers at their estate, the Rutherfurd House in Allamuchy, New Jersey and their winters at their estate, Ridgeley Hall in Aiken, South Carolina. Her father was also a well known breeder of smooth-haired fox terriers and a gentleman farmer of Allamuchy Farms.
Barbara married the local golf legend Robert (Bobby) Winthrop Knowles Jr. of Aiken SC. Together they organized the Knowles Bowl at the Palmetta Golf Course, an annual golf event benefiting the Aiken Day School and Aiken Prep School and eventually benefiting the Hitchcock Foundation. Barbara was also a Red Cross Volunteer during WW II. She was an avid bridge player, croquet player as well as a very accomplished golfer. Barbara was highly regarded in the Aiken community and as like her mother was known for her charm and elegance. She died at the age of 83 and was survived by her daughters, Lucy and Alice. She was laid to rest beside her beloved Husband Bobby Knowles in the Rutherfurd Family Plot in Tranquility Cemetery, with her Mother Lucy, Father Winthrop and eventually all of her six siblings near their Family Estate in Allamuchy, New Jersey.
