Alice Morton was born in Newport Rhode Island, the fourth daughter of U.S. Vice President Levi P. Morton(1824-1920) under U.S President Benjamin Harrison(1889-1893) and Governor of New York(1895-1897) and his wife Anna Livingston Street Morton (1846-1918).
In 1902, Alice married the New York Society figure Winthrop Chandler Rutherfurd. Their engagement was entered on the Society pages of the New York Times, dated January 13, 1902 as follows:"MISS ALICE MORTON TO MARRY MR. WINTHROP RUTHERFURD. Miss Morton made her debut two winters ago. She is very tall and Blond, and extremely chic, and a great belle of society. Winthrop Rutherfurd is perhaps one of the best-known men in New York Society. He comes from the old Rutherfurd family whose town mansion still stands on Fifteenth Street and Second Avenue where he lives, and sometimes has had a cottage at Newport, RI. Winthrop Rutherfurd is very wealthy, much of his fortune being derived from the Rutherfurd property on the east side of New York City. He was a graduate of Columbia in 1884. He is adept in all out-door sports, and is a capital shot, a well known yachtsman, and a daring rider to the hounds. He is forty years old and has always been considered one of the most eligible bachelors in New York."

After their wedding Winthrop Rutherfurd commissioned a 18,000 square foot brick home on Allamuchy Farms, in Allamuchy, New Jersey next to Allamuchy Pond in 1903-1905. This estate was adjacent to his father's estate (and ancestral home)Tranquility Farms.
Winthrop and Alice had six children: Winthrop (1904-1988), John P. (1910-1987), Hugo (1911-2006), Guy, Lewis Morton (1903-1920) died at the age of 16, and a daughter, Alice Rutherfurd (5/25/1913-5/21/1953).
Alice Morton Rutherfurd died suddenly on June 19, 1917 from an appendicitis, at the age of 38. She was buried in the Rutherfurd family plot, Tranquility Cemetery, New Jersey near their Allamuchy estate.
