His mother, Margaret was the niece and adopted daughter of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant and Helena Rutherfurd Stuyvesant-(Lewis Morris Rutherfurd's aunt).His father Lewis Morris Rutherfurd was a know scientist, astronomer and inventor."The Rutherfurd Crater" on the Moon is named after him.

Morton was Vice President under President Benjamin Harrison from 1889 to 1893 and then Governor of New York from 1895 to 1897. Winthrop and Alice were fourth cousins, once removed.

In 1907, 1908, and 1909 his champion "Warren Remedy", a smooth fox terrier won "Best in Show" for 3 consecutive years. A feat that has never been duplicated. His favorite fox terrier was named Brass Tacks.
Winthrop and Alice had six children: Winthrop (1904-1988), John Parsons (1910-1987), Hugo (1911-2006), Guy, Lewis Morton (1903-2/4/1920)died at the age of 16 and a daughter, Alice Rutherfurd(5/25/1913-5/21/1953).
