Winthrop's brother Stuyvesant Rutherfurd(1842-1907)later changed his name to Rutherfurd Stuyvesant (as a provision under the will of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant in 1847) in order to transmit the Stuyvesant fortune. His sister Louisa Morris Rutherfurd (1855-1892)died at the age of 37. His sister Margaret Rutherfurd White(1854-1916) married Henry White a US diplomat. Winthrop and his brother Lewis Morris Rutherfurd Jr.(1859-1901) initiated the family's breeding of fox terrier dogs. Winthrop and Lewis owned the famous "Rutherfurd Kennels" in New Jersey.
Winthrop Rutherfurd had an intriguing romance as a youth. In 1895, he was secretly engaged to Railroad Heiress, Consuelo Vanderbilt, whose marriage to the Duke of Marlborough was annulled years later by the Sacred Rota of the Roman Catholic Church on the ground that she had loved Winthrop Rutherfurd, but had been forced to marry Marlborough by her domineering mother, Alva Vanderbilt.
In 1902 he married his first wife, Alice Morton. Alice Morton was the fourth daughter of Levi P. Morton (1824-1920) and Anna Livingston-Street Morton (1846-1918). Levi P. Morton was Vice President under President Benjamin Harrison from 1889 to 1893 and then Governor of New York from 1895 to 1897. Winthrop and Alice were fourth cousins, once removed.
The engagement of Winthrop to Alice Morton was entered on the Society pages of the New York Times dated January 13, 1902 as follows: "MISS ALICE MORTON TO MARRY MR. WINTHROP RUTHERFURD. Miss Morton made her debut two winters ago. She is very tall and blond, and extremely chic, and a great belle in society. Winthrop Rutherfurd is perhaps one of the best-known men in New York Society. He comes from the old Rutherfurd family whose town mansion still stands on Fifteenth Street and Second Avenue where he lives, and for sometime has had a cottage at Newport. Winthrop Rutherfurd is very wealthy, much of his fortune being derived from the Rutherfurd property on the east side of NYC. He is a graduate of Columbia in 1884. He is an adept in all out-of-door sports, and is a capital shot, a well known yachtsman, and a daring rider to the hounds. He is forty years old and has always been considered one of the most eligible bachelors in New York."
The New York Times also published the following announcement of their wedding on February 18, 1902."MISS MORTON IS MARRIED- Winthrop Rutherfurd and Alice Morton were married at noon in Grace Church. The wedding was extremely simple. As it was lent, there were no floral arrangement, no bridesmaids nor maid of honor. Invitations to the church were limited to intimate friends and relatives. There was no reception at the Morton residence after the ceremony, but an informal breakfast for the bridal party was given."
Winthrop Rutherfurd would later commission a 18,000 square foot brick home on Allamuchy Farms,in Allamuchy, NJ next to Allamuchy Pond in 1903-1905. This estate was adjacent to his father's estate Tranquility Farms. He also competed in the Westminster Kennel Club, with his fox terriers. In 1907, 1908, and 1909 his champion "Warren Remedy", a smooth fox terrier won "Best in Show" for 3 consecutive years. A feat that has never been duplicated. His favorite fox terrier was named Brass Tacks.
Winthrop and Alice had six children: Winthrop (1904-1988), John Parsons (1910-1987), Hugo (1911-2006), Guy, Lewis Morton (1903-2/4/1920)died at the age of 16 and a daughter, Alice Rutherfurd(5/25/1913-5/21/1953).

Winthrop, a New York society figure, married his second wife, Lucy Mercer in February 1920. Winthrop's son Lewis Morton Rutherfurd died on the eve of their wedding (2/4/1920). Winthrop was 30 years her senior. They had one daughter Barbara Rutherfurd Knowles (6/14/1922-11/6/2005).
In 1914 Lucy Mercer served as Eleanor Roosevelt's social secretary and shared a romantic affair with Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This affair could have ended his marriage to Eleanor as well as his political career.
