Herb was born on August 5, 1929, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Carl and Irene (Visger) Popp. He attended Webber School and later join the U S Army - Airborne, where he served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage on August 21, 1954 in Saginaw to Sophie A. Smietana. He worked for 29 years with Consolidated Freightways as a mechanic and truck driver, retiring in September of 1985. Herb was a member of S.S. Francis and Clare Parish in Birch Run and the Teamster Retirees Club. In his free time he enjoyed rebuilding tractors and dune buggies along with hunting and fishing.
Surviving are: His beloved wife of 65 years Sophie; Children: James (Debbie) Mitas, Janice (Tim) Jones, Sue (Rich) Schomaker, Sally (Kelly) Robinson and Joani (Gene) Zietz; Grandchildren: Stephanie (Rick), Christopher, Jennifer (Chad), Kyle (Megan), Jared (Sarah), Chad (Dana), Chelsea (Jeremy) and Caleigh (Max); 22 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Herb was also preceded in death by his dearest son Joe Mitas, his parents and siblings Dorothy, Norma, Richard, Margie, Nancy, Helen and Jim.
