William Langford Welch, 88, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2005.

A native of Macon County, he was the son of the late Wilburn E. and Alice Kimsey Welch. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

He was a mill worker in the lumber industry; a U.S. Army veteran, being one of the first volunteers from Macon County during WWII; worked as a sheep herder in Utah; and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are sisters and brothers, Maude Baldwin, Muriel Welch and Thomas Paul Welch, all of Franklin, Fred Welch of Sylva, Joanna Hedrick of Charlotte and Louis Welch of Jefferson City, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, at 2 p.m., at Burningtown Baptist Church. Rev. Jim Kinard officiated.

Burial was in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.
