Franklin - Ralph "Red" Wayne Welch, 96, of Curtis Street, Franklin, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at his residence.

He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Wilburn Edward and Alice Kimsey Welch. He was married to Ethel Jean Teague Welch who passed away in 2000. He worked with the atomic energy commission for eight years during World War II. He was a policeman and security guard for many years in Franklin and also a carpenter. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Shirley W. Rowe of Charleston, S.C., and Jean Welch of Franklin; three sisters, Maude Baldwin and Muriel Welch of Franklin and JoAnna Hedrick of Charlotte; four brothers, Paul and Bill Welch of Franklin, Fred Welch of Sylva and Lewis Welch of Jefferson City, Tenn.; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Ball officiating. Burial will be in Burningtown Baptist Church cemetery. Charles Baldwin, Trent Johnson, Gilmer Henson, Sammy Angel, Bryson Hodgins and Kenneth Mashburn will serve as pallbearers.
