Mervis was a Union Representative for A.F.S.C.M.E. in Jersey City for 20 years until his retirement in 2013. He previously worked at Greystone State Psychiatric Hospital for 25 years and was also involved in the union there.
He attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Boonton, NJ.
He died December 15, 2017 at St. Clare's Hospital in Dover, NJ.
