Andrew Jackson English was born January 19, 1883, in Gainesville to James Nelson English and Martha (Mollie) Harrison Lurry who both came to Texas from Georgia after the Civil War.

He was the youngest of four sisters, Audra, Annie, Lillie and Mattie and one brother, Charles. The family moved to the West Dallas area in the late 1880's, settling in Irving in 1912. His mother, Mollie, died in July 1900.

A. J. married Andrew Mable (May) Williams Marrs, daughter of America Sidney Dial and Andrew Williams. May was a widow with a son, Houston Clay Marrs.

He worked as a carpenter and bricklayer, helping build the houses of many of his children and their families.

His children were Albert Stafford "Jack", Curtis Leroy, Nellie Margaret, Russell Dial, Dorothy, Esther Belle, Mable Louise, Myrtle Alyene, Jess Willard "Bill", David Eugene and Andrew Jackson "Jay" Jr. Dorothy, born in 1910, died in 1911 and is buried in Western Heights Cemetery, Dallas. He was step-father to Houston Marrs, first child of his wife, May Williams Marrs.

After May's death in 1925, A.J. married Dollie May Clements Baker.
