Esther Allen English was the second daughter of Andrew Jackson and
Andrew Mabel "May" Williams English, a family who moved from West Dallas to Irving in 1912. This made her the first of their children born in Irving, where A. J. and May bought enough property to give each of their children a plot of land. Her father A. J. was born in Gainesville, Texas, the last son and child of James Nelson English, a Georgia-born Confederate soldier who came to Texas after the Civil War and his wife, Martha Harrison "Mollie" Lurry English.

Esther was sister to Albert "Jack", Russell Dial, Nellie Margaret, Curtis Leroy, Mable, Myrtle, Jess Willard, David Eugene and Andrew Jackson "Jay," all Englishes and step-sister to Houston Marrs. A baby sister, Dorothy, was born in West Dallas in 1910 and died in 1911, buried in Western Heights Cemetery.

Esther met the love of her life, Jewel Allen of West Dallas, when she was 18. Their two children were Shirley and Jack, and they lived in the Oak Cliff area of West Dallas.
