Willis Ray Maassen

Willis Ray Maassen was born September 2, 1929 to Julieus and Sena (Andersen) Maassen. Willis was the ninth son of 11 children. He received his education at Valley #2 and on to Avoca for 8th grade and graduated for Avoca High School in 1946 and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Willis was united in marriage to Betty Joyce Krohn on June 6, 1954 and to this union they had four sons: Jeff, Bruce, Roger and Richard.
He was always interested in cooking. Willis owned the 64 Café until he sold it and then continued to work at various restaurants including: Kerns’s Café, Villager, Avoca Grocery Store and Avoca Super Foods until he retired. Willis also had his own bakery out of his home where he was always well known for his cinnamon rolls, caramel sticky rolls, potato salad and pies. It was said that Willis could make 6 pies to the one Joan is deciding on making.
Willis passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 having attained the age of ninety years, one month and thirteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents Julieus and Sena; son Richard; siblings Orpha, Howard, Gerald, Walter, Ralph, Francis, Dale, Curtis and John.
He is survived by his wife Betty; sons Jeff (Dawn) Maassen of Hancock, Iowa; Bruce (Jacque Koch) Maassen of Springfield, Illinois; Roger (Jennie) Maassen of Avoca, Iowa; daughter-in-law Allison Maassen of Neola, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 5 step–great grandchildren; sister Joan Andersen of Atlantic, Iowa; nieces and nephews; many friends and family.
