Joan J. Andersen, 89, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic.
Joan Jean was born November 26, 1931, to Sena and G. Julieus Maassen in Avoca, Iowa. She grew up in Avoca and attended Avoca public schools. At the young age of 16 she graduated from Avoca High School with the class of 1948.
On April 16, 1950, she married Bernard Andersen at her parents' home in rural Avoca. The couple started farming and continued to farm north of Atlantic their entire married life. Joan stayed on the farm after Bernard passed away in 1994 until she moved into Atlantic in 2012. Enjoyable activities for Joan included the Elk Horn Saddle Club, Kid A Bit Club, quilting and embroidering, dancing, and playing cards.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Andersen; parents, Sena and G. Julieus Maassen, granddaughter, Sara Burney; son-in-law, Darrell Begley; and sister and brothers, Orpha, Howard, Gerald, Dale, Walter, Ralph, Francis, Curtis, John, and Willis.
Surviving Joan are her children, Dolly (David) Bergmann of Atlantic, IA, Teddy (Barbara) Andersen of Kimballton, IA, LuAnn Begley of Atlantic, IA, and Candis (Kevin) Nelson of Brayton, IA; grandchildren, Dawn (Donald) Dreager of Atlantic, Chad Begley of Atlantic, Shane (Cara) Andersen of Elk Horn, Alisha (Michael) Gruber of Harlan, Jill (Steven) Obrecht of Harlan, Wade (Lacey Baker) Harris of Dallas Center and Natalie (Steven) Ritter of Atlantic; 22 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Visitation with family will be from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2021, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 7, 2021, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA, with burial in the Atlantic Cemetery.
