Mary was the 6th of 12 children born to Virginia and Joseph Meek, early settlers of this area. She was raised on the Meek family donation land claim near here. She married John Shinn sometime before 1875. They had two sons, Joseph and Charles. She died in 1878 at age 27, when her boys were not yet five years old.
