While en route to the Willamette Valley in 1836 Meek placed Helen Mar in the care of missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman at Waiilatpu, a mission the Whitmans had established about 6 miles from present day Walla Walla.
Helen contracted measles and in late 1847 and succumbed due to exposure shortly after the the Whitman Massacre of November 29, 1847; a calamity with Nez Perce Indians that resulted in many deaths and ended the mission.
According to Catherine Sager, one of the seven orphans who arrived at Whitman's house in 1844, Helen was 7 years old at the time of her death.
