Marie was born Mary Ellen Bagley, daughter of James Bagley and Alice Stafford. James had been married before to Eliza Jane Anderson and when she died she left four little ones. On July 4, 1881, James married Alice Stafford. She was only 16 at the time and quite young to take the responsibility of four children, nevertheless she married James and became the mother of her own four little ones, Mary Ellen, Ivory, a little boy who only lived two years, Vesper Pearl and a little Luella. Alice like Eliza did not live to see her little ones grow up and on Dec 2, 1890 she passed away. After she was gone, James found it difficult to care for his family and after much thought on the subject he felt that it might be better if his three smallest daughters were put into foster homes until the time he could provide better for them.

Mary was taken into the home of a Free Methodist Preacher named Ella Bonner. Little Mary grew up, married Victor Eugene Meyers and had 10 children. According to her sister, Vesper, she had so many grandchildren she lost track of them. In the early 1960's she could count 55 great grandchildren and then lost track there. Somewhere in time her name became changed to Marie Elta.
