Helen Beatrice Mitchell Ayers, 94 of Plainview, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2019.

Graveside Service is scheduled for 11 o’ clock in the morning on Thursday, March 14, 2019 in Greenview Cemetery, located east of Miller Grove, TX on County Road 1168. The family will receive friends from 6-8 o’ clock in the evening on Monday, March 11, 2019 at Lemons Memorial Chapel. Arrangements are entrusted to Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview, TX. Local arrangements are entrusted to Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home of Sulphur Springs, TX.

Helen Beatrice Bevill Mitchell Ayers was born February 22, 1925, in Wood County Texas, the third oldest of twelve children of Henry Mack Bevill and Rosa Julia Hyde. She passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019. She married Howard (“Buck”) Mitchell November 6, 1944. Two sons, James and Ricky, were born while the family lived in East Texas.After farming a few years in Rains County, Texas, the family moved in 1952 to the small community of Claytonville (east of Kress and northeast of Plainview). After learning more about farming “West Texas” style with tractors and irrigation, they moved one year later to Hart where they lived and farmed for the next three decades.

After the death of Buck in 1982, Helen moved into Hart where she lived for several years. It was during this time she became well known for the decorative pillows she made for all kinds of special occasions & also sold at many arts & crafts fairs. Helen was very proud of earning her GED after both sons were grown and married. She substituted for many teachers in the Hart Public schools and was a long-time member of the Zealot club. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hart for many years. Other involvements included teaching a children’s Sunday School class and serving as the director of the VBS several years. While living in Plainview she was a member of the First Baptist Church and served in the hospital auxiliary for many years.

She married Manuel Ayers, a life-long resident of Plainview, in 1987. Helen made numerous trips to Austin while he attended Silver Haired Legislature meetings and was at his side for many Plainview high school and Wayland sporting events. He passed away six years later.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, five sisters (Pearlie, Sally, Edith, Martha, and Julia), and six brothers (J. L., Clovis, Mack, Q.D., Louis, and Carl).

She is survived by two sons and their families. James Mitchell and his wife Phillis (Weatherford) and Ricky Mitchell and his wife Janet of Lubbock.She is also survived by five grandchildren and their spouses: Brad Mitchell and his wife Tonya (Weatherford), Jami Berry and her husband Mitchell (Midland), Lyndy Nelson and her husband Jason (Dimmit), Mark Mitchell and his wife Kim (Shallowater), Whitney McEvers and her husband Trent (Canyon). There are also 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She is also survived by one sister: Frankie Jo Seymour of Lubbock.
