Melba Effie Harden, Mother of Gary Leigh Harden and daughter-in-law, Deanna Harden, of 1012 Reynolds Road, Johnson City, died Thursday, October 6, 2005.
She went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ while residing at Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home in Ithaca, N.Y.
She was 93 and was born in Spokane, Washington, raised in Billings, Montana, and lived for 10 years after marriage to Leigh Harden in Minnesota.
They moved to the Ithaca, N.Y. area in 1945 where they lived with son, Gary, and daughter, Beth (Hilker).
She was an honors graduate of both Billings High School and Eastern Montana State Teachers College. She taught for several years in Montana and after moving to the Ithaca area, in three local Christian churches and with several youth groups--fellowships and 4-H programs. She also was a bookkeeper for Cornell University Dairy Dept. and full-time mother and homemaker.
She was a member of several social, charitable and Christian organizations, including Home Bureau, Enfield Grange, Enfield Methodist/Baptist Church, Ithaca Woman's Bible Study, Christ Chapel, and Bethel Grove Bible Church.
Cornell University in Ithaca and its people have also been a big part of Melba and Leigh's life. He was a professor and Director of Admissions in the College of Agriculture and Life Science from 1945 to 1973; and after serving as a high school teacher and university faculty administrator in Minnesota. She worked there in the Dairy Plant Office for many years. Also, three other family members have been Cornell students.
She has been a very loving, attentive and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt to her family.
She was predeceased by her father, mother, husband; and three of her sisters.
She is survived by her older brother, Everett Webster; younger sister, Edna May Schoessler; brother-in-law, Maynard Jones; her son, Gary Harden; and daughter-in-law, Deanna; daughter, Beth Harden Hilker, Ithaca, N.Y. Also by seven grandchildren, Douglas Hilker, Noreen (Hilker) von Borstel and her husband Doug, Scott Harden and his wife, Tracy, Keith Hilker, Alysia (Harden) Palmer and her husband, Kevin of Hillcrest, N.Y., Todd and Andrew Harden of Johnson City, N.Y. In addition, by seven great-grandchildren, Brittany Harden, Hillcrest, N.Y., Kyle Maine, Tyler Harden, Jeremiah von Borstel, Kendall Palmer, Luke von Borstel and Bailey Palmer, Hillcrest, N.Y. Also especially close nephews, Richard Harden and Robert Webster; plus many other nieces and nephews.
Special friends during her last few years have been Sally Sincock, Ruth Walker, Carol Fay and Kaisa Grohn of Ithaca and other brothers and sisters in Christ at BGBC and Christ Chapel and in the Ithaca community.
A service in celebration of Melba's life and faith was held on Sunday, October 9, at the Bethel Grove Bible Church, Ithaca, N.Y. It was a time of great reflection, celebration and sharing about Melba's life and faith. Many who attended expressed their sympathy at separation from Melba and felt great joy on recognizing her present place and life with her Lord and God in the Heavenly realm.
