Joseph S. McAlister Passes Away at Home of Daughter, Mrs. A.E. Douglas, 708 Douglas.

Services to Be Held Here
Burial Will Be Made in McAlister Cemetery Near Overbrook.

Joseph Scott McAlister, 86, one of the early day residents of Southern Oklahoma, died Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs.A.E. Douglas, 708 Douglas Boulevard. The funeral will be from Harvey Bros. chapel at 10 a.m. Friday, conducted by Rev. Elbert M. Whitwell, pastor of the First Christian church.

Commitment services will be at the McAlister cemetery. Pallbearers are Jim Lathrop, Clarence Harris, Ernest M. Jameson, M.H. Lindley, Willis Whittington and James Boone.

Born at Terre Haute, Ind., Sept. 14, 1849. He came to Waco, Texas, in 1870 and married Kate Van Cleave. They settled at Overbrook in 1887 on a farm which McAlister operated for many ears in connection with a general merchandise store.

Was Methodist and Mason
He and his wife joined the Methodist church at Overbrook under Rev. J.C. Scivally, one of the pioneer Methodist ministers. Soon afterward he became a member of the Masonic order at Lone Grove and served eight years as first worshipful master of the lodge at Overbrook.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Frank and Roy McAlister, and three daughters, Mrs. Douglas, Mrs. Minnie Criner and Mrs. C.P. Hollingworth. There are nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren."

Mrs. Katie Ann McAlister, who came to Oklahoma in territorial days and settled in the Overbrook Community in 1879, died Tuesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.P. Hollingsworth, 411 C. street southeast. She was 92 years old and had made her home in Ardmore since 1898.

Born Feb. 1, 1852 at Blakesburg, Iowa, Mrs. McAlister was in good health until a week ago. She fell in her home last Thursday and developed pneumonia which resulted in her death.

Mrs. McAlister is survived by two sons, Roy McAlister, Ardmore and Frank McAlister, Batesville, Texas and two other daughters, Mrs. A.E. Douglas and Mrs. Minnie Criner, here.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Harvey Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Homer Haislip minister of the First Christian Church, and the Rev. Robert Smith, pastor of the First Methodist Church.

Burial in Rose Hill cemetery will have Clarence Harris, E.M. Jameson, Hugh McIntire, Leonard Hurst, Jerry Kirby and Leo Atkins as pallbearers."

Services for Mrs. Ashley E. (Vina) Douglas, 95, were to be 4 p.m. Monday in Harvey Chapel conducted by Dr. Edwin W. Parker and the Rev. C. Lawson Holman. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Douglas, a member of an early day pioneering family in this area, died Saturday evening after an extended illness. The former Vina McAlister, she was born Apr. 3, 1878 in Blakesburg, Iowa and with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Scott McAlister, moved to Overbrook, I.T. in 1881 from Iowa. She married Ashley E. Douglas, Mar. 11, 1903 at Ardmore and he died Oct. 18, 1930. She maintained the residence they established at 708 Douglas Blvd. until her death.

A charter member of the Carter Ave. Methodist Church, Ferndale Review Club and Chickasaw historical Society, Mrs. Douglas will be remembered as matron of the Whittington Park wading pool from 1932 until 1940. She then went to Oklahoma city and was house mother for junior nurses at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, returning to Ardmore in 1954.

Serving as bearers will be Tom Carlock, Wig Yates, Terrell Bolles, Bill Smithers, C.F. Copeland and J.C. Priddy. Honorary bearers will include all neighbors and friends of the family.

Surviving is a son, Stephen A. Douglas Sr., Midwest City; a grandson, Stephen A. Douglas Fr., Ardmore; a granddaughter, Mrs. Eddie (Judy) Schimmel, San Antonio, Tex.; and six great-grandchildren. A son, George C. Douglas, preceded her in death in 1933.

Memorial contributions may be made to one favorite charity. Services were directed by Harvey Funeral Home."
