Matthew married Mrs. Elizabeth Jane (nee Grubb) Hall on 01 Aug 1878 in Monroe County, Indiana.
Born in Virginia, she was the daughter of Isaac Grubb, Jr. and Anna Hillenburg. Elizabeth married her first husband, Ambrose Hall, on 08 Aug 1874 in Monroe County. Their marriage was very brief, and he remarried on 15 Jan 1876.
Matthew and Elizabeth were the parents of 7 children, and he was a farmer. After all of their children were born, Matthew served in the Spanish-American War in 1898.
Tragedy struck the family in 1906 when the Butchers' son, John, was working in a stone quarry. He suffered a fractured skull when stones came together accidentally. At the time of his death, John was 25-years-old.
Elizabeth passed away as a result of complications of diabetes on 27 May 1922.
At the time of his death due to valvular heart disease, Matthew was 74 years, 2 months and 16 days old.
He was buried next to his wife, Elizabeth, on 26 Apr 1927.

Matthew Butcher, age 74 years, died Sunday morning at his home southwest of the city. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Mt. Ebal church. Interment was in the Mt. Ebal cemetery. He is survived by five sons, a daughter, one brother, two sisters, and one half-brother.
