Born May 28, 1920, in White Salmon, Wash., to Charlie and Dora Ann (Hickman) Thornton, he was reared and attended school there.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked in the timber industry as a lumber grader.
A member of the Assembly of God in White Salmon, and the American Legion Post 22 in Chehalis, he enjoyed playing the piano and especially enjoyed his family.
On Nov. 22, 1967, he married Fern Poisel in White Salmon. She died April 9, 1995.
Survivors include his son, Fred Jr. Of Reedsport, Ore.; five daughters, Deletha Goodrich of Rochester, Nada Duncan of Soap Lake, Linda Warner of Packwood, Wanda Gribner of White Salmon, and Cathy of Ogden, Utah; his brother, Hugh of Siletz, Ore.; three sisters, Dora Koch of White Salmon, Mildred Alpin of Bingen, Wash., and Ruby McGee of Vancouver, Wash.; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
