DORA ANN THORNTON
White Salmon resident, Dora Ann Thornton, who turned 100 years old in August, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, in Hood River, Ore.. Mrs. Thornton, known affectionately by many as "Grama," was born Aug. 6, 1877 to Jacob and Josephine (Hill) Hickman in Troy, Ohio. The family moved to Bingen and later Trout Lake when Dora was a girl. At the age of 16 she married Charles H. Thornton, and White Salmon became their home. Mrs. Thornton was a homemaker who reared ten children of her own and two grandchildren after her oldest daughter died. "Grama" also was a member of the Husum Church of God. She is survived by six of her children, daughters, Mildred Aplin of Bingen, Ruby Durkee of Vancouver, Washington, and Dora Koch of White Salmon; sons Charles of Goldendale, Hugh (Doc) of Siletz, Ore., and Fred of Chehalis, Wash., and 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, numerous great great-grandchildren, and 3 great great great-grandchildren. Services for Mrs. Thornton were held Saturday, Sept. 26, in the Gardner Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Dave Garrison officiated. Interment followed in the Chris Zada Cemetery, Underwood, under the direction of Gardner Funeral Home.
