Melford was born to Ommund E. and Christine (Mortenson) Oftedahl on their farm near Dawson, Minnesota. He married Nora Nelson, and they took over her parents dairy, renaming it The Melnora Dairy on Wisconsin in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. The land where Rice Lake High School stands was once their farm. Melnora Street is named for Melford and Nora. They had no children, but were very active in church and the Gideon ministry, thereby having many spiritual children.
