Reverend Hobo Applegate, age 86, of Oldfield, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2007. He was born November 26, 1920, in Merritt, Missouri, the son of David Henry and Jessie Grace (Scott) Applegate. He served his country in World War II by joining the U.S. Army as a member of the 20th Infantry. On December 31, 1945, he and Opal Alene Jackson were united in marriage. Reverend Applegate most recently was pastor of Hilltop Calvary in Ponce de Leon. He had also served as an evangelist, missionary, oilfield worker and logger. He was a member of Sparta Masonic Lodge #296, and was Past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Davenport, Oklahoma. He was a 32nd degree mason, and was on the 28th degree team of Scottish Rite in Joplin. Survivors include: His wife of 62 years, Opal; a son, Truly Applegate and wife Judy, Springfield; a daughter, Nona Atkinson and Donnie McHaffie, Ozark; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special family, Dale and Cathy Roller, Sparta; nieces and nephews; and a host of church families. He was preceded in death by two sons, infant Phillip Paige Applegate and Frosty Applegate, a grandchild, James Richard Atkinson, 17 brothers and sisters, and his parents. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24 in Adams Funeral Home, Ozark, with Rev. Dale Roller and Rev. Keith Lafferty officiating. Burial will follow in Old Boston Cemetery, Oldfield. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
