Rev. Melvis K. Applegate, age 90, of Sparta, died Friday, June 14, 1996 of a sudden heart attack. He was born August 18, 1905 in the Oklahoma Territory, and was the son of David Henry and Sarah Frances (Homer) Applegate. On September 23, 1927 he was united in marriage to Bertha Eula Willis. Rev. Applegate was a timber worker and sawmill operator. He built and served as pastor for several years at Union Hill Baptist Church, Oldfield. He was a member of Sparta Masonic Lodge #296. He was preceded in death by: His wife, Bertha, in 1994; a son, Dee Applegate; and thirteen brothers and sisters.
