Norman J. Child

Norman John Child, 92, passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Care Center in Farr West, Utah.
Norm was born on November 3, 1924 in Roy, Utah a son of Emma Clydie and Abiah Wadsworth Child. He grew up as a farm boy at various locations in Utah and Southern Idaho, eventually settling with his young family in Bear River City, Utah, where he operated a small farm while moonlighting as a Vocational Education Teacher and Department Head at the Intermountain Inter-tribal School in Brigham City, Utah until his retirement. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings.
At the age of 19, he entered the Navy and flew as a Tail-gunner in a convoy support PV Ventura Bomber during World War II, and carried the rank of Navy Aviation Ordnance Officer-Third Class. After the war, Norm continued to serve his country as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserve for a brief time. It was while he was in the Navy that he met his lifetime sweetheart, Louise Marie Melanson, while stationed in Maine near her hometown of Strong. He and Louise dated long distance for almost a year, until Norm proposed by mail. Louise happily accepted and the two were married on March 18, 1946 in Lewiston, Maine. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Louise left the lush green hills of Maine to follow Norm to Utah, where they raised five children and taught them the challenges and rewards of small-farm life.
Norm was very active in the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Combined Veterans from Box Elder County. He earned his reputation as a hard-working and devoted volunteer by performing in over 2000 military salutes and flag-raising ceremonies for deceased veterans. This experience qualified him to be selected as part of the flag-raising team during medal ceremonies for Team USA in the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Surviving are his children: Dennis (Geraldine) Child, Logan; Dave (Ann) Child, Tremonton; Carolyn (Henry) Yates, Richmond; Douglas (Laurie) Child, Eden; Dean (Allyson) Child, Plain City; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Also, siblings: Fern Kearl and Dale Child.
Preceded in death by his wife, Louise, parents, siblings: Fred Child; Nita Rees; Thelma Wier; Ellis Child; Les Child and Ralph Child.
