Mary E. Barnes was born in Meade County, Kentucky and was the 9th of 12 children born to parents Armstead Barnes (1809-1854) and Elizabeth Dowell (1814-1896).

Mary Barnes was married to John W. Fife. Meade County marriage records show that Mary E. Barnes married J. W. D. Fife on January 5, 1875. They had four children: Victor, Bert, Frank and Elijah.

John W. Fife died in early March of 1883 while cutting trees in Jackson Twp., Livingston County, Missouri located near Chillicothe. An article in the newspaper The Chillicothe Crisis mentions his death and states that he was a resident of Jackson Township of that county. It would appear that John Fife and family moved to that location because Mary's brother Elijah H. Barnes, as well as several Dowell family members had moved to Jackson Twp.

A brief note written by Mary's niece, May Wimp, later Mrs. Harley Caffrey of Sedgwick, Kansas, mentions that around 1900, Mary Fife stayed quite a long time with James and Jemima (Barnes) Wimp near Patterson, Harvey County, Kansas and then returned to Kentucky. (Letters of Charles L. Barnes furnished by his great niece, Thelma (Hickok) Queen. Charles (1892-1980) was the son of Armstead L. Barnes (1843-1923), brother of Mary Fife and Jemima Wimp.)

Mary Fife did not remarry after her husband's death. Mary died at the age of 87 on the afternoon of March 19, 1936 at 3828 Southern Parkway in Louisville, Kentucky. Her death certificate states that she died from a form of pneumonia.
