Elijah Hicks Barnes was born in Meade County, Kentucky, the 8th of 12 children of Armstead Barnes (1809-1854) and Elizabeth Dowell Barnes (1814-1896). Notes indicate that family members did not call him Elijah, but referred to him as Hick or Hicks. Documents show that he was known as E. H. to others. It would seem that Elijah Hicks Barnes was named after his grandfather, Elijah Barnes (1777-1845), who last resided in Nelson County, Kentucky.

E. H. Barnes married Sophia Swan Hayden in Meade County, Kentucky on January 28, 1864 by Baptist minister Reverend George H. Hicks (1814-1873). Reverend Hicks served 30 years as the minister of Hill Grove Baptist Church during the time E. H.'s parents and family were members there. I think that Reverend Hicks was the source for E. H. Barnes' middle name. Hicks was a minister of considerable local fame, serving 21 churches, and during one period, serving 6 churches at the same time. During Reverend Hick's career he baptised 1,580 people and married 250 couples.
The Reverend Hicks connection to this Barnes family doesn't end there. Documents show that "Rev. G. H. Hicks" was assigned 2 payments by the executor (Gideon Barnes 1809-1864) of the estate of Elijah Barnes (1777-1845), the grandfather of Elijah Hicks Barnes, in Nelson County, Kentucky, which appears to indicate Hicks conducted the funeral services for Elijah in 1845. Records of the church of Elijah Barnes (First Cedar Creek Baptist Church of Nelson County) reveal that Reverend G. H. Hicks was the minister there at that time. This was also the church of the Elijah Barnes family.

No record or family stories have been located indicating that E. H. Barnes served in the Civil War. And by most standards he would have been a bit young. However, two of his brothers, Gideon R. and Armstead L. did, both serving for the South. Gideon lost his life during the war from a measles outbreak, dying in 1862. He and others in his company are buried in Paris, Texas.

By late 1864, E. H. Barnes and Sophia were in Missouri. Their first child, William, was born there in December of that year.

In August 1870, the census lists the E. H. Barnes family as; Hicks, age 29, wife, Sophia, age 25, sons, William, age 6, and George, age 6 months. They were farming in Medicine Twp., Farmersville P. O., in Livingston County, Missouri. Farmersville is located about 100 miles northeast of Kansas City, Missouri. Many of their relatives had relocated in Livingston County, Missouri including Sophia's sister, Rebecca, who married Simeon Dowell.

The 1880 census shows that E. H. Barnes and family were farming in Jefferson Twp. in Grundy County, Missouri. This location was actually just a few miles north from where they'd lived in Livingston County. Their family is shown as; Elijah H., age 35, wife Sophia S., age 35, son William, age 15, son George, age 10, and daughter Mary E., age 5.

The 1900 Census shows that their family was living in the same location in Grundy County. It also shows that Sophia was the mother of four children, three of which were living.

Miss Mollie Barnes' house in the west part of town is about completed.

In the papers of E. H. and Sophia's daughter, Mollie, an obit was found for Marshall B. Guinn who died in Belle Plaine, Kansas on Oct. 12, 1906. His obit does not give any evidence that he was a relative. Possibly he was simply a neighbor or acquaintance?

By 1910, Elijah Barnes, age 64, Sophia, age 64, and daughter Mary E., age 30, were living in the town of Trimble in Clinton County, Missouri. Elijah's occupation is listed as farming.

In 1920, E. H. Barnes, age 74, Sophia, age 74, and daughter Mollie, age 44, were living at 817 Penn Street in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.

A land deed dated March 27, 1925, shows that E. H. Barnes sold 10 acres of land in Boone County, Arkansas to his son, G. R. Barnes, for the sum of $1.00 and other valuable considerations (These considerations are not mentioned). It also states that E. H. Barnes is a widower, not remarried, and a resident of Wyandotte County, Kansas. G. R. Barnes was a resident of Valley Springs, Arkansas. (State of Kansas, County of Wyandotte Warranty Deed dated March 27, 1925, Record 32, pg. 112.)

A photo included here shows E. H. Barnes and daughter Mollie sitting on the edge of a front porch, and says, "My little home out 6 miles from 10th and Main, K. C., Mo. We lived there from 1923-1929 then came back to Trimble, Mo." This was written by Mollie. Her mother wrote that Mollie took a job to save money for her old age. Was her job located at 10th and Main in Kansas City?

E. H. and Sophia had children:

1. William Burnis Barnes (1864-1912), married Eva Barbara Dowell, burial in Sodville Cemetery (land that they'd donated for a cemetery) in Kingsdown, Ford County, Kansas. They were the parents of 9 children.

2. George Richard Barnes (1870-1944), married Rosie Emma Kincaid or Kincade. Burial in Cedar Cemetery, Montrose, Montrose County, Colorado. They were the parents of 8 children.

3. Monta (likely John Lamont) Barnes, was born in 1872 and died as an infant in Chariton County, Missouri. The date of his death is unknown at this time. In his mother's obituary, this child is just called Monta, not saying if it was a boy or girl. In family notes of Neva Barnes Clevenger (1899-1988) of Minneola, Kansas, Neva calls this child John Lamont Barnes. Neva was a daughter of William Burnis Barnes. Neva's notes also quote her Aunt Mollie Barnes.

4. Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Barnes (1875-1968), was married in her 60's to Alex Gauld. Burial in Ridgely Community Cemetery, Platte County, Missouri.

Sophia Barnes died at the age of 75 on August 8, 1920 in Trimble, Clinton County, Missouri. The cause of her death as indicated on the death certificate is cancer of the liver, with cancer of the breast as contributing. Sophia was buried in Ridgely Community Cemetery in Platte County which is about 5 miles east of their residence in Trimble. It has been recently rediscovered that Sophia's mother, Mary E. (Walker) Hayden (1818-1894), is buried just 3 miles north of Ridgely Cemetery in Mt. Zion Cemetery next to her son Jacob Hayden and daughter Rebecca Jane (Hayden) Dowell.
E. H. and daughter Mollie lived together after Sophia died.

E. H. Barnes died after an extended illness at the age of 87 years, 7 months on April 23, 1933 at his home in Trimble, Clinton County, Missouri. His death certificate states that the cause of his death was cancer of the neck. He had lived to an older age than any of his 11 brothers and sisters, living to be about 2 months older than his sister Minerva Jane (Barnes) Brandenburg (1837-1925) of Hardin County, Kentucky. E. H. was survived by two children; George R. and Mollie; 15 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.
E. H. Barnes was laid to rest next to his wife, Sophia, at Ridgely Community Cemetery in Platte County, Missouri which is just a few short miles west of their home in Trimble, Missouri.
