Jemima was the 6th of 12 children of Armstead Barnes (1809-1854) and Elizabeth Dowell Barnes (1814-1896) of Meade County, Kentucky.

We can only guess the origin of her name. However, we know that her great-grandmother was Jemima (Board) Dowell, and her aunt was Jemima (Dowell) Bramlett. Armstead Barnes had an aunt, Jemima (Barnes) Hamilton, who was born ca. 1778.

Jemima Barnes (age 16) was married to James Abel Wimp on March 24, 1858 at Mrs. Elizabeth Barnes (home) in Meade County, Kentucky by J. W. Kasey in the presence of S. C. Malin, Richard Dowell and others. (Meade County, Kentucky Marriage Certificate.)

They had 15 children;

1. John Henry Wimp m. Elizabeth Catherine Dillingham. Burial at Eads Cemetery, Eads, Kiowa County, Colorado.
2. Elizabeth Wimp m. James M. Parker, last residence Harvey County, Kansas. Burial at Star Cemetery, Harvey County, Kansas.
3. Joseph S. Wimp, burial at Star Cemetery, Harvey County, Kanas.
4. Rose F. Wimp, married N. B. Peck in 1887 at her parent's home. Further info shows that he was Nathan Peck. Wimp family notes state that Rose died in 1891, but don't give any further information. The trail to find Rose may lead to near Asherville, Mitchell County, Kansas. From the Burrton Free Lance newspaper dated November 13, 1891, "Nathan Peck of Ashville, Kansas left Tuesday morning after about a weeks visit among friends around Patterson. Nate was formerly a resident of Lake Township, but is now in the employ of the U. P. road at the above place." (I find nothing on a town in Kansas named Ashville, just Asherville.) There is also a mention of a Mrs. N. B. Peck in Louisburg, Miami County, Kansas in 1891. "Mrs. N. B. Peck and Miss Tude Brandeberry spent Wednesday in Paola." (Louisburg Herald, May 22, 1891)
N. B. Peck remarried by 1891 as shown here. The Beloit Gazette (Kansas) December 31, 1891; PecK-Smith - At the residence of the bride's parents, on Christmas afternoon, 1891, by Rev. J. P. Way, Mr. N. B. Peck and Miss Susan Smith; both of Asherville, Kansas. The groom has been for nearly a year the obliging agent of The Union Pacific Railway at Asherville, while the bride has lived here for many years. The wedding was private.
5. William P. Wimp m. Ide Pilkington, burial at Star Cemetery, Harvey County, Kansas.
6. Gano Wimp m. Amanda Pilkington, burial at Wichita Park Cemetery, Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.
7. Coulson Wimp m. Maude Lovelace, burial at Old Mission Cemetery, Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.
8. Sally Wimp m. Columbus Race, burial at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mount Hope, Kansas.
9. Anna H. Wimp died as an infant, burial at Star Cemetery, Harvey County, Kansas.
10. Frank Wimp m. Gay Lovelace, burial at White Chapel Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas.
11. Tina Wimp died as an infant, burial at Star Cemetery, Harvey County, Kansas.
12. Mary Alice Wimp m. Frank A. Howell, burial in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio.
13. Lydia Grace m. George F. Howell
14. Richard Wimp died as an infant, burial at Star Cemetery, Harvey County, Kansas.
15. Eva May Wimp m. Harley L. Caffrey, burial at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mount Hope, Kansas.

In 1906, a Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas newspaper writes, "A Happy Meeting - Mr. and Mrs. Barnes of Belle Plaine, Kansas came in last week for a visit with his brother and sister Mr. A. L. Barnes and Mrs. J. A. Wimp. It was certainly a happy meeting for they had not seen each other for over 42 years. The family formerly lived in Kentucky and in 1864 Mr. Barnes left the rest of the family and located in Missouri where he lived until about three years ago when he moved to his present location, hence the meeting."
Note: The Mr. and Mrs. Barnes of Belle Plaine, Kansas mentioned above is Elijah H. Barnes (1845-1933) and his wife Sophia S. (Hayden) Barnes (1845-1920) who had moved from Meade County, Kentucky to Missouri in 1864. By 1870 they're residing in Livingston County, Missouri where many of their relatives settled after leaving Meade County, Kentucky. The 1905 Kansas State Census does show E. H., S. S. and M. E. (their daughter Mollie) Barnes farming near Belle Plaine, Sumner County, Kansas.

"DIED - Mrs. J. Wimp, who has been very low at her home for the past two years passed away this morning at five o'clock. The funeral services will be held tomorrow (Saturday) morning at the Christian church conducted by Elder Roe." (Dated Dec. 31, 1909, possibly the Mount Hope Clarion newspaper.)

Jemima was survived by her husband, 11 of their 15 children, and at least 25 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Funeral services were held the following morning at the Christian Church and conducted by Elder Roe. The funeral home was Wulf-Ast Motuary of Mount Hope, Kansas, whose records list the cause of death as paralysis. Funeral charges were $105.00 plus $5.00 for flowers and $10.00 for the hearse to transport her to the cemetery. Jemima Barnes was buried on January 1, 1910, the day following her death. Her funeral and burial were attended by a large number of people.
Note that Jemima's brother, Armstead "A. L." Barnes (1843-1923), a person who lived near Jemima nearly all of his life, is buried in an adjoining lot (Block 1, Lot 13) in Star Cemetery.
