Rachel was the 3rd of 12 children born to Armstead Barnes (1809-1854) and Elizabeth Dowell Barnes (1814-1896) who farmed 10-15 miles south of Brandenburg in Stith Valley located in Meade County, Kentucky. Armstead is buried in the old Meadville Cemetery in Meade County, Kentucky, and Elizabeth is buried in Redmon Cemetery in Cooke County, Texas.

Rachel could have been named for her paternal grandmother, Rachel (Willcocks) Barnes (1774-1840), wife of Elijah Barnes, who last resided in Nelson County, Kentucky.

Barnes family notes of Rachel's niece, Mary E. "Mollie" (Barnes) Gauld (1875-1968), state that Rachel Barnes (b. 1836) was first married to Richard Saunders. Their marriage is shown as December 27, 1852 in Meade County, Kentucky according to Kentucky Marriages 1851-1900. It is unclear how many children they had, but had at least these children;

1. Mary E. Saunders
2. Armstead Saunders who married Ada Stith.
3. Marion Saunders who married Elizabeth Richardson.

Richard and Rachel divorced and Rachel married widower Andrew J. Rees on Feb. 14, 1861. Andrew and Rachel had children;

1. Jane Rees, married Temple Simmons
2. John Rees
3. Julia Rees, married Levi M. Neafus
4. Sarah Rees, married T. L. Lamkin

Notes of Rachel's niece, Mary E. "Mollie" (Barnes) Gauld, shown here, state that Rachel Barnes Rees died on January 9, 1874 instead of June 9th as shown on her marker. Depending on which month Rachel died, she was just 37 or 38 years old. The cause of her death is unknown [to this writer] at this time.
