Former Hookstown Farmer Makes Annual Visit To Fair
Former Hookstown area resident Tom Allison, in his 90's, is a faithful visitor to the Hookstown Fair -- in fact, he's never missed one in the event's 44 - year - history. Although he now lives in Florida, Allison annually makes the return plane trip to view the fairgrounds and visit with local relatives. Born a son of John Lincoln Allison and Ella Mae Laughlin Allison, he was raised on a 101 - acre farm just a mile outside of Hookstown. He delivered butter produced at the farm to area residents and prides himself on remembering many of the locals in the Georgetown - Hookstown area. At one time Allison drove a horsedrawn hearse for H. O. Stewart, the local undertaker. Eventually, he ran the family farm and also worked at Crucible Steel in Midland, retiring in 1960. Among those he visited during his stay were his nieces, the Abrams sisters of Chester - Leona, Alberta and Eunice, with whom he stayed; his sister, Ellen Bartley of Chester; and his brother, Clayton, who is hospitalized in Pittsburgh. Years ago, when the idea for the Hookstown Fair was conceived, Allison was there among the planners. "I helped start it," Allison recalled. "It began as a get - together for old friends, but it's large now - a business place, really." Even thought the fair has changed greatly since it started, Allison still enjoys coming every year. " I meet all my old friends, and I love the stock - horses, cattle and so on." His relatives believe the three - day visit is too brief, but Allison cautions, " I don't want to wear out my welcome. I want to be able to come back next year."

Lakeland, Fla. -- James T. "Tom" Allison, 98, of the Senior Meadows Retirement Center died at 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 1993, at the Oak Bridge Village following a lengthy illness. He was born in Hookstown July 18, 1895, a son of the late John "Link" and Ella Lockland Allison. A permanent resident of Florida since 1962, Mr. Allison was employed at the former Crucible Steel Co., before retiring in 1962. He was Presbyterian by faith. His wife, Fronie Allison, died May 18, 1980. He also was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers. He is survived by a sister, Ellen Bartley of Chester, and several nieces and nephews. Services are planned at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Burial is to be in Mill Creek Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
