During World War II, Bill was a fighter pilot in the 350th Fighter Squad, 353rd Fighter Group, European Campaign. He flew over 70 combat missions, and was awarded the Air Medal with 6 oak leaf clusters as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross.
While stationed overseas, Bill became engaged to a young woman from Scotland. He died tragically when his plane crashed shortly after the war's end, and is buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery, New Mexico.
