William Maynard Agnew was the oldest of 5 children born to William Frazer Agnew and Lizzie (Funston) Agnew. He grew up in Woodson County, Kansas, where he met and married Sara Esther Weide, youngest daughter of Fritz and Anna (Bundter) Weide.

Maynard and Sara had three children: Lt William Maynard Agnew Jr. 1923-1945 (fighter pilot in WWII); Jane Bethene (Agnew) Vidal 1924-2013; and David Frazer Agnew 1932-2001. They first settled in El Dorado Kansas, then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, finally relocating to Albuquerque, New Mexico during the dust and drought of the 1930s.

A World War I veteran, Maynard served as a sergeant in the Machine Gun Troop of the 1st US Cavalry, patrolling the US-Mexico border on horseback. He is buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
