Janie was the middle child and only daughter born to William Maynard Agnew and Sarah Esther (Weide) Agnew, of Yates Center, Woodson County, Kansas. When she was a child, her family moved from El Dorado, Kansas to Tulsa, Oklahoma, before relocating to Albuquerque, New Mexico during the 1930s.

A graduate of Albuquerque High School at the age of 16, Jane attended the University of New Mexico, where she was a Student Council member, vice-president of Spurs (sophomore national honorary organization), and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

In 1947, she married Steve Vidal, and their marriage lasted 67 years until her death in 2014. They had four children together. Jane was active in community civics, and was a leader of Brownie, Girl Scout, and 4-H groups. She also variously drove a school bus, cooked for a crew of ranch hands on the U-Bar ranch in New Mexico, and was secretary of the First Methodist Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico for several years, as well as for other companies, including Greyhound in Phoenix, Arizona and the Environmental Protection Agency in Denver, Colorado.

Jane died at the age of 89 years, and her ashes were kept by her family.
