In 1853, Mary's husband, Captain William Murdoch, died at sea aboard the ship Breeze of Annan on a voyage from Liverpool, England to Buenos Aires, Argentina. William's body was buried at sea.
During summer months, the widow, Mary (nee Clachrie) Murdoch, operated a six-apartment boarding house called Magnet Cottage in the village of Kippford amidst the beautiful Galloway countryside, the cottage looking directly onto the Urr estuary of the Solway Firth.
Mary died, May 23, 1881, at Kippford from fatty degeneration of the heart for many years, and anasarea and ascites for two months. She is buried in the Colvend Parish Churchyard.
The manager of this FAG Memorial would like to join forces with other Clachrie and McClachrie researchers in an attempt to "unite" the McClachrie Clan.
