William Murdoch was born February 15, 1806 at Burnbarroch, Scotland, a child of James Murdoch and Janet Riddick. Like his father, William Murdoch became a sea captain, and on April 20, 1830 at Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland he married Mary Clachrie and they had at least five children: James; Janet; David; William; and Mary. May 18, 1853, Captain William Murdoch died at sea aboard the ship Breeze of Annan on a voyage from Liverpool, England to Buenos Aires, Argentina. His body was buried at sea.
