Lawrence Emil Beaver, 96, rural South Whitley, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, April 5, 2018. He was born July 13, 1921, at his home on East Sycamore Street in Kokomo. Further, he was delivered by his aunt, Katherine Ryan, because the doctor was called out on an emergency. He was the second born to Emil Francis "Shorty" Beaver and Agnes Charlotte "Peggy" Beaver.
His brothers were John Beaver, Daniel Beaver, William Beaver Sr., and Edwin Beaver. All of whom were from Kokomo and preceded him death. In addition, he has one sister, Elizabeth Catron, living in Michigan.
He was baptized, educated, and married at St. Patrick Church in Kokomo. He graduated from Kokomo High School, Class of 1940.
Growing up with his cousin, Robert Ryan, he loved to hunt and fish. During the Depression, he saved his money to help his family. In high school he earned the nickname "Ike." During high school he would set print, and run errands for the Kokomo Tribune. After high school he went to work for the post office. Then on Aug 27, 1940, he went to work at Delco, Kokomo. Oct. 21, 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. His military service included multiple battle campaigns in Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, central Europe, and Ardennes. While in the Army Corps of Engineers, he was a draftsman, reaching the rank of corporal Tec. 5.
Once he returned from the military, he went back to work at Delco Electronics, which is where he met his wife, Alice Josephine Ulerich-Spradling. They were married on June 23, 1948. She preceded him in death March 4, 1999.
His children included one stepson, Marion Eugene Spradling II; three sons, Michael Beaver (wife, Dianne), Lawrence (Pit) Beaver (wife, Gloria), and Robert Beaver (wife, Nora); two daughters, Patricia Lundberg and Sarah Wright (husband Roger). In addition, he has seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Lawrence retired from Delco Electronics with 48 years of service. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of the UAW 292, and a member of the American Legion Post 286.
The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Son Miller Chapel, South Whitley. Burial is in the South Whitley Cemetery. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the North Manchester American Legion Post 286 or the Humane Society of Whitley County.
