Cornelius, called "Neal" by friends and family, was born in Tazewell Co., VA in 1823 (sic). When his father and stepmother migrated to KY, he remained in Virginia. At the age of 16, he was married on February 7, 1839 (by William Shannon, Sr.) to Rebecca Jane Patterson, born in Alleghany Co., VA. Her father was Harvey (Henry?) Patterson. Rebecca Jane died at "Stoney Ridge" which was in the Cove Creek District. This is probably where they lived. Neal farmed the last remaining property of Hiram's (his father Hiram Compton) at BlueStone, west of Bluefield, VA.
